American Coots are small migratory duck-like waterfowl that are part
of the rail
family. Coots are very social animals that can quickly learn to recognize people
as individuals, and will become faithful companions. Following their lives as individual characters
when they return on migration from year to year makes a very compelling story. This site has a
monthly news report, references to coot research, and my own observations. To learn
more about coots, select from the following headings.
